Ubisoft Quebec's Francois Paradis explains how the studio built a procedural dialogue system for Assassin's Creed Odyssey, enabling 30 hours of cinematic content across over 1,000 scenes with 25,000 voice lines. The system automates staging, camera work, animation, and lighting, allowing a small integrated team of writers, quest designers, and cinematic designers to iterate quickly. About 20% of scenes were fully automated, while most used a mix of procedural and manual polish. Challenges included ensuring scene data stayed updated (solved by nightly full regeneration) and balancing automation with creative control. The talk covers the technical pipeline: dynamic camera rigs, layered body and facial animation, procedural lighting, and avoidance of NPC intrusions. Future possibilities include machine learning for gesture animation.
